Monday - Wishes

For this task, you need to wish for a number and think of all the different ways that you could present it.

For example: I wish for the answer 7. How could I make that number?

Some examples are below:

  1. addition and subtraction/number bonds, e.g. 5 + 2 / 14 - 7
  2. multiplication (including decimals), e.g. 7x1 / 0.7x10 / 0.07x100
  3. division, e.g. 21÷3 / 70 ÷10
  4. fractions, e.g. 7/1
  5. shape, e.g. square + triangle
  6. abstract ideas, e.g. legs on a spider - 1
  7. connections, e.g. days in a week

(idea of wishes taken from Jamie Thomas)

To get you used to this idea, create a diagram, like the one below, writing down all the ways you can think of to create the answer you wished for.

Once you’ve got the idea, to make this harder, you could see how many ways you can think of in two minutes.

Now try it with a different number. Finish this sentence: I wish for the answer ?. How could I make that number?
