At our school, Design and Technology is an ambitious and carefully planned subject that enables all pupils to develop as creative, resourceful and confident designers and makers. Our curriculum follows the Kapow Primary condensed curriculum, providing a broad, balanced and progressive framework that develops practical skills alongside pupils’ understanding of how products are designed, made and used.
From the Early Years onwards, pupils develop practical skills through a range of engaging, hands-on projects. They learn to design, make and evaluate products, developing skills in areas such as structures, mechanisms, textiles, cooking and nutrition, electrical systems and the digital world. Pupils learn to select and use tools and materials safely, measure and cut accurately, join and assemble components, and apply their knowledge to solve problems and improve their designs.
The curriculum is coherently sequenced to support pupils in knowing more and remembering more. Skills, knowledge and vocabulary are revisited and developed over time, enabling pupils to make connections and build confidence. Through designing, making, testing and evaluating, pupils are encouraged to be creative, think critically and persevere when solving problems.
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils have developed a strong foundation of practical and creative skills, alongside the confidence to approach design and making with curiosity, purpose and resilience.
