Meryfield Art
At our school, Art and Design is an ambitious and carefully planned subject that enables all pupils to develop as confident, creative and reflective artists. Our curriculum is underpinned by the AccessArt approach, which provides a broad, balanced and progressive framework, ensuring depth of learning alongside a wide exposure to artists, media and artistic disciplines.
From the Early Years onwards, pupils develop strong practical skills in key areas such as drawing, painting and sculpture. These core specialisms are revisited and built upon over time, allowing children to refine their techniques and apply their learning with increasing confidence. Alongside this, pupils develop an understanding of art history and are introduced to a range of artists, designers, architects and craftspeople from different cultures, eras and backgrounds. This helps pupils to understand the many dimensions of art and its place in the wider world.
The curriculum is coherently sequenced to support pupils in knowing more and remembering more. Skills, knowledge and vocabulary are revisited in different contexts, enabling pupils to make connections and develop meaningful understanding. Sketchbooks are used effectively to support reflection, experimentation and the development of ideas over time.
Art and design also makes a valuable contribution to pupils’ personal development and wellbeing. Through creative exploration and self-expression, pupils are encouraged to take risks, think critically and communicate their ideas with purpose. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education, having developed both the skills and confidence needed to continue their artistic journey.
