Meryfield Geography
At Meryfield, geography supports children in developing an understanding of the world and their place within it. In the Early Years, children begin by exploring their immediate environment, learning about familiar places, features and routines. This early curiosity forms the foundation for geographical learning across the school.
As pupils move through Key Stage 1 and into Key Stage 2, their learning broadens from the local area to the UK and the wider world. Children learn about continents, oceans and key physical and human features, building a clear sense of place and scale. They develop geographical skills such as using maps, atlases and globes, carrying out fieldwork, and using subject-specific vocabulary accurately. Pupils learn to compare locations, ask geographical questions and understand how environments change over time. Geography also encourages children to think about sustainability, the oceans and how people can care for the planet, while developing a respectful understanding of different places and cultures.
