Meryfield History

At Meryfield, we aim to provide a history curriculum, which, in addition to providing children with knowledge of the past, enables them to understand the impact of the past on their present. Our curriculum aims to inspire curiosity, and to encourage the children to be critical thinkers by developing their debating, enquiry, analytical and evaluation skills.

We follow the History National Curriculum and the children learn through focusing on the key historical concepts of:

· Chronology and constructing the past

· Enquiry and using sources

· Cause and consequence

· Similarity and difference

· Continuity and change

· Significance and interpretation

The children develop an understanding of the changes and consequences of actions that have occurred over time by being taught about local, British and international history. Our curriculum is sequenced so that knowledge builds year on year. Links between topics are made to support retention of knowledge, a greater understanding of where each period fits chronologically, the impact of previous periods and the similarities and differences between (and within) periods. To bring history to life and extend the children’s understanding and curiosity of each topic, we provide them with memorable experiences through visitors to the school which are brought into school and external trips to places of historical interest.

By the time children leave our school, they will have developed a solid foundation of historical knowledge, a curiosity about the past, and the skills to think critically and thoughtfully about history and its impact on the modern world.
