Meryfield Maths
At Meryfield, we want every child to feel positive about maths. Our aim is for children to enjoy their lessons, build strong understanding and feel confident using their skills in everyday life.
We know that children learn best when they can talk about their ideas, explain their thinking and use the right mathematical vocabulary. That’s why we place a strong emphasis on reasoning, helping children not just to get an answer, but to understand how they got there and why their method works. This builds deeper understanding and long-lasting confidence.
Across the school, we follow Herts for Learning ESSENTIALmaths. This provides a clear, consistent approach from Reception to Year 6, ensuring that learning builds step by step each year. It supports children in developing fluency, problem-solving skills and a secure grasp of number.
We make maths meaningful by linking learning to real-life situations that children recognise whether that’s measuring in the classroom, spotting patterns outdoors, or solving practical problems. We also value opportunities for children to share their learning with family members through the regular ‘Maths at Home’ section in the school newsletter as this helps build pride and self-esteem. A highlight of our year is Number Day, when the whole Meryfield community comes together to celebrate the fun and creativity of maths.
Through engaging lessons, practical activities and lots of discussion, we help every child become a confident, curious and capable mathematician.
