PE and Sport Premium
Meryfield Sports Premium
At Meryfield, we are using our Sports Premium to achieve self-sustained improvement in the quality of PE and sport in our school. With the allocation of the Sports premium, it is expected that schools will see an improvement against the following 5 key indicators:
1. The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles
2. The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
3. Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
4. Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
5. Increased participation in competitive sport
As a school, we aim to provide children with a positive attitude towards exercise and teach them important skills which they will carry into later life. We want the children to understand that participating in sport is important for our well-being both physically and mentally. Developing their basic physical skills, as well as their confidence, will set the foundations for a physical and active healthy lifestyle.
Our objectives
• Competence in a variety of activities.
• Children who have high stamina and can complete activities for sustained periods of time.
• Engagement in competitive sports and activities.
• Lead healthy and active lives.
What we want to develop
• Children who are exposed to a broad range of activities.
• A keen interest in PE and a willingness to participate.
• Develop team building skills and a sense of sportsmanship.
• Children who are strong leaders but can work within a group.
• Children who are able to discuss ways to improve their performance/skill.
• High levels of physical fitness which will be transferrable later in life.
• An understanding of a healthy lifestyle and the effects.
• The ability to swim 25m before leaving Year 6.
What is the PE and sport premium for?
The guidance reminds schools that the funding should be used to:
-
support all pupils to live active, healthy lives
-
ensure that PE and sport are accessible for all children
-
help children thrive in PE, regardless of background or ability
-
improve children’s health, wellbeing, personal development and academic attainment
-
embed a long‑term culture of regular physical activity
The core PE curriculum should be supported via standard school funding. For its part, the premium acts as additional funding to provide the space, flexibility and capacity to do more than the minimum.
Primary school is a pivotal time for children’s physical development. They are developing movement confidence, learning fundamental skills (balance, agility, coordination) and hopefully developing positive attitudes towards exercise.
