Year 1

Welcome to Year 1.

In Summer term, our topic will be Summer by the Sea.  

In English, we will be reading engaging texts and writing in a range of styles including non- fiction texts and narrative. We will cover a variety of grammatical features and will continue to build clear sentences with ambitious vocabulary. 

In Maths we will be learning about

•             Addition and subtraction

•             Measurements

•             Counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s

•             Place value

In Science, we will be learning about plants, your child will be taking home a planted seed to watch its growth.  They can also record their findings in their plant diary.

In Computing, we will be learning to use text digitally and to programme animations. We will continue to learn how to stay safe online and when using electronics.    

In Art, we will be using a range of materials creatively to design and make a 3d bird. They children will develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line shape, form and space.

In Design Technology, we be making a range of different salads, we will be learning how to peel, zest and cut safely.  The children will gain practical ideas about ingredients that can be combined to make interesting and healthy salads.  

In History, we will be looking at and comparing the features of a seaside holiday both historically and in the present day.  The children will learn about significant people such as George Stephenson and Grace Darling.  We will also be giving the children the experience of a seaside day in school.  

In Geography, we will be looking at the coasts and sea, the different settlements in the United Kingdom and the features of a beach including cliffs and harbours.

In PSHE, we will be exploring different relationships.  We will be learning about friendships, families, people who help us and being our own best friend.   We will also learn about how we change.

In RE, we will be focusing on the religion of Judaism.  Our enquiry questions are:

  • Is Shabbat important to Jewish children?
  • Does visiting the synagogue help Jewish children feel closer to God?

In PE, we will be developing our striking and fielding skills, our defending skills needed for target games.  We will also be building up our athletic skills.

In Music, we will be looking at music pitch, tempo and highs and lows.

Phonics Screening Check

During the summer term, all Year 1 children complete the statutory Phonics Screening Check (PSC). The Phonics Screening Check will consist of the child reading 20 real words and 20 pseudo-words (not real words).
