Year 1

Welcome to Year 1.

In Spring term, our topic will be Long, long ago.

In English, we will be reading engaging texts and writing in a range of styles including poetry and narrative. We will cover a variety of grammatical features and will continue to build clear sentences with ambitious vocabulary.

In Maths we will be learning about 2D and 2D shapes ad estimating answers. We will be focusing on numbers up to 20, finding double and half of numbers and learning how to think 10 to solve calculations. 

In Science, we will be learning about animals including humans, body parts and the five senses.

In Computing, we will be learning how to program a robot (Beebots) and grouping data. We will continue to learn about E-Safety . Focusing on how to stay safe online and when using electronics.  

In Art, we will be exploring print in the environment around us. We will be using a variety of media to create prints including repeated patterns.

In Design Technology, we will be evaluating moving pictures before creating ones of our own, using familiar fairy tales as inspiration.

In History, we will be looking at school from the past focusing on Victorian schools.

In Geography, we will be looking at the United Kingdom, their capital cities and the differences between villages, towns and cities.

In PSHE, we will be focusing on our Dreams and Goals and learning how to keep healthy in mind and body.

In RE, we will be focusing on the religion of Judaism and Christianity. For Judaism we will be learning about who is God to Jews and for Christianity we will be learning about the Easter story in particular Palm Sunday.  

In PE, we will be developing our ball skills and exploring skills needed for target games.

In Music, we will be looking at music inspired from around the world and rhythmic patterns.

Phonics Screening Check

During the summer term, all Year 1 children complete the statutory Phonics Screening Check (PSC). The Phonics Screening Check will consist of the child reading 20 real words and 20 pseudo-words (not real words).
