Year 5

Welcome to Year 5!

In Spring term, our topic will be 'Ancient Greece'.

In English, we will be writing a balanced argument on whether we should change the time school starts. After this, we will explore 'The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore'. The children will be working on improving their sentence structures by focusing on the grammatical features of writing such as adding conjunctions, relative clauses and fronted adverbials.

In Maths, we will be exploring fractions before looking at area and volume. Please continue to support your child by practising times tables at home with them and encourage them to use helpful websites such as TT Rockstars.

In Science, we are studying the properties and changes of materials.

In Art, we are studying Mixed Media Lands and City Scapes, where we will evaluate some imaginative pieces of art before experimenting with different mediums to create our own land and city scape.

We are looking forward to our 'Ancient Greek History Off the Page' day where our classrooms and the hall will be transformed into an Ancient Greek agora and the children will live like an Ancient Greek for the day. Furthermore, towards the end of the spring term, we will be visiting Reverend Collins at St Michael's church as part of our RE unit.

Please remember, we have an open-door policy so if you have any concerns, please speak to us, email us via the admin email account or contact the office to arrange a convenient time to speak on the phone.

History Off The Page Day

During our "History Off The Page" day, the children were transported back to Ancient Greece and explored what life was like in Athens during the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC.

Visit to Borehamwood Library

We visited Borehamwood Library to explore the thousands of books they have on loan. The children investigated a series of non-fiction texts and found fascinating facts to share and also read instructions in some art books to create some very impressive drawings. We also talked about the Winter Reads Challenge which the children are excited to take part in  - especially as one lucky child will win an Ipad.

Puja - Visit from parents

We were very lucky to have a parent come and talk to us about the Hindu ceremony of puja. She explained the significance of the parts of the ritual and how it is marked in her own home. Thank you Anish and Aditya for letting us borrow Mum!
