Year 6
Welcome to Year 6!
This term our main theme this is World War 2.
In English, we will be writing a recount inspired by the book ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’ by Emma Carroll, which is set in WW2.
In Maths, we will be focusing on improving our fluency. We will also be developing our reasoning and applying skills through solving many different problems. Please help us by practising where you can, especially by supporting your child with learning the time, using money and with their multiplication and division facts.
Our History will be an exploration into World War 2, how it started and how it affected the people at the time. In Art, as well doing a project based on graphic design, we will be looking at art based on WW2, propaganda posters and their desired effects.
We have an exciting year ahead so please see below for more information on the Year 6 curriculum.

Science at Habs 2025
Partnership with Haberdashers Boys School
Every Tuesday afternoon this term, Year 6 have been going to Haberdasher’s Boys’ School for their Science lessons.

Last week, we had the opportunity to dissect a heart, learning about the different sections and how they all work together to pump blood around the body.

The sixth form pupils have been leading the demonstrations and sharing their knowledge to help us.
Meanwhile, on another visit.......
Year 6 pupils became real scientists last week as they carried out an exciting investigation at Haberdashers’ school to measure the energy content in different foods. Working carefully in small groups, the children used simple calorimetry techniques, safely burning food samples to see how much energy they released by measuring the temperature change of water. They planned fair tests, recorded results accurately, and compared their findings to see which foods provided the most energy. The investigation helped the children develop their practical science skills while deepening their understanding of nutrition and gave them a valuable taste of secondary school science.

Year 6 have been working hard on Stage 2 of the Eco Warriors competition. They have created a model of their dream sustainable school using upcycled materials. Next week, a small group will be presenting their work to the judging panel. Wish us luck!

Stage 3 *WINNERS*
We are thrilled to announce that our Year 6 children have been crowned winners of the Hertfordshire Eco Warriors in Schools 2025 competition! As proud champions, the school will receive a fantastic £2,000 grand prize to support our sustainability plans and projects.
The children progressed to the third stage of the competition, where they designed and built a model of their dream sustainable school using upcycled materials, before presenting their ideas to a judging panel. The judges were deeply impressed by the group’s innovative and sustainable thinking, praising their excellent teamwork and their ability to deliver clear, concise initiatives that truly set them apart.
The children attended a special award ceremony in Hertford, where they were presented with a trophy, certificates, goodie bags, Sustainable Hertfordshire Wildflower Seed Project Packs and the cheque. Aylmerton 2025
Aylmerton 2025
The Year 6 five-day residential trip to Aylmerton, Norfolk was a great success. The children had the opportunity to enjoy new and unique experiences: shelter building, going on a twilight safari, driving boats through the Norfolk Broads, walking through the mud at Blakeney, searching for semi-precious stones across the beach at Cley and even graduating as qualified pirates! Shiver me timbers!
History - Ancient Maya Civilisation
History - Ancient Maya Civilisation
Year 6 have really enjoyed diving into the world of the ancient Mayas this term! They’ve loved discovering how the Maya lived, what they believed, and all the amazing things they achieved. Most recently, the children researched ancient Maya religion and were fascinated by their gods, rituals, and colourful traditions. They put all their new knowledge together to create some fantastic information sheets, and we were so impressed by the creativity and effort they put into them!

English - Tales from Outer Suburbia
Year 6 have thoroughly enjoyed reading Tales from Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan in their English lessons this half term. Inspired by the imaginative short story Our Expedition, they have written their own original adventure narratives, all based in Borehamwood. The children explored the idea of what fictional world might exist on the very edge of the town and included specific locations around Borehamwood in their stories. They used prepositional phrases, expanded noun phrases and ambitious verbs to uplevel their writing, adding detail and depth to their imaginative journeys filled with mystery, discovery, and adventure. The class has shown great enthusiasm and creativity, developing their descriptive writing skills while engaging deeply with Shaun Tan’s unique style and themes.
