Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

This term our main theme this is Home and Away.

In English, we will be working on our grammar through reading some exciting new texts that will inspire our writing such as Thornhill by Pam Smy.

In Maths, we will be focusing on improving our fluency.  We will also be developing ur reasoning and applying skills through solving many different problems.  Please help us practise where you can, especially by supporting your child with learning the time, using money and with their multiplication and division facts.

Our History will be an exploration into the fascinating world of the ancient Mayan civilisation while in Geography we will be looking a little closer to home by studying the physical and human features of the United Kingdom.

We have an exciting year ahead so please see below for more information on the Year 6 curriculum.

During Agora Optimism Week, we thought about our goals for this year and the years ahead at secondary school. We discussed the importance of positive thinking, self-confidence and how optimism can help us realise our dreams.  We created totem poles to represent the steps we will need to take to achieve them.

History - Ancient Maya Civilisation

Year 6 have really enjoyed diving into the world of the ancient Mayas this term! They’ve loved discovering how the Maya lived, what they believed, and all the amazing things they achieved. Most recently, the children researched ancient Maya religion and were fascinated by their gods, rituals, and colourful traditions. They put all their new knowledge together to create some fantastic information sheets, and we were so impressed by the creativity and effort they put into them!

Aylmerton 2025

The Year 6 five-day residential trip to Aylmerton, Norfolk was a great success. The children had the opportunity to enjoy new and unique experiences: shelter building, going on a twilight safari, driving boats through the Norfolk Broads, walking through the mud at Blakeney, searching for semi-precious stones across the beach at Cley and even graduating as qualified pirates! Shiver me timbers!

Science - Bright Sparks!

Our Science topic this term is ‘Electricity’. We have had fun investigating what determines the brightness of a bulb by comparing the functions of the different components in a circuit. First, we tried changing the size and number of cells in the circuit and then experimented with different size wires to see how this affected the bulb brightness. Ask your child what conclusions they reached.

Exciting News!

We’re delighted to let you know that our Year 6 children have successfully progressed to Stage 2 of the Eco Warriors competition! Congratulations to all the children who were involved; their hard work and commitment to sustainability have truly paid off.

The next step is to prepare a presentation and create an eco- friendly sculpture as part of our final submission. Wish us luck!

Stage 2 *UPDATE*

Year 6 have been working hard on Stage 2 of the Eco Warriors competition. They have created a model of their dream sustainable school using upcycled materials. Next week, a small group will be presenting their work to the judging panel. Wish us luck!
