Believe and Achieve

Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

This term our main theme is World War 2.

In English, we will be writing a recount inspired by the book Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll, which is set in WW2, and then later, we will be writing a ghost story based on the book Thornhill by Pam Smy.

In Maths, we will be focusing on improving our fluency.  We will also be developing our reasoning and applying skills through solving many different problems.  Please help us by practising where you can, especially by supporting your child with learning the time, using money and with their multiplication and division facts.

Our History will be an exploration into World War 2, how it started and how it affected the people at the time.  In Art, as well doing a project based on graphic design, we will be looking at art based on WW2, propaganda posters and their desired effects.

See below for more information on the Year 6 curriculum.

Our Learning Environment

Year 6 had an exciting and informative visit to Bentley Priory.  They learnt about The Battle of Britain and how 'The One, The Few and The Many' contributed to the allied victory of WW2.

History: World War II

Year 6 have really immersed themselves in their History topic of World War II. We are looking forward to our trip to Bentley Priory next month to further develop our knowledge and understanding of life during this time.

NSPCC Number Day 2024

Year 6 celebrated NSPCC Number Day by playing 'Who wants to be a Mathionaire?'; we then had a go at completing a range of problem-solving tasks and practised our times tables.

No Pens Day 2023

Year 6 really enjoyed No Pens Day; the children brought in a range of interesting items that were special to them, asked lots of questions and generated good discussion.  It was lovely to find out more about each other, the things that are important to us and why they matter.

Design Technology: A Mexican Style Salad

Year 6 finished off their Design and Technology unit by making a Mexican style salad; this linked nicely to our learning about the Mayans in History.  We practised different chopping techniques and learnt how to be safe and hygienic when preparing food.  There were mixed reviews on the salad - some of us loved it but some of us were not too keen on coriander!
