Believe and Achieve

Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

This term our main theme this is Changes.

In English, we will be writing our own horror stories inspired by 'A Monster Calls' by Patrick Ness.  We will then move on to letter writing and getting in to role as Walter Beckett - an MI5 secret agent!

In Maths, we will be focusing on improving our fluency.  We will also be developing our reasoning and applying skills through solving many different problems.  Please help us practise where you can, especially by supporting your child with learning the time, using money and with their multiplication and division facts.

Our History and Geography will be an exploration of the local area and region; we will be looking at how Borehamwood has expanded over the years and the impact immigration has had on the area. In Art, we will be experimenting with a range of media through exploring portraiture and Manga art.  This summer will involve a range of sport in PE including cricket, athletics and rounders.

As we are coming to the end of Year 6, we will be carrying out lots of little projects, supporting the children with their transition to secondary school - how exciting!

Please see below for more information on the Year 6 curriculum and to keep up to date with what's happening in class.

Our Learning Environment

Art Project - Graphic Design

Year 6 really enjoyed their graphic design art project.   They learnt all about packaging, design and typography and then used their knowledge and skills to redesign the packaging of some of our favourite foods.  The final results are really impressive.

Year 6 had an exciting and informative visit to Bentley Priory.  They learnt about The Battle of Britain and how 'The One, The Few and The Many' contributed to the allied victory of WW2.

History: World War II

Year 6 have really immersed themselves in their History topic of World War II. We are looking forward to our trip to Bentley Priory next month to further develop our knowledge and understanding of life during this time.

NSPCC Number Day 2024

Year 6 celebrated NSPCC Number Day by playing 'Who wants to be a Mathionaire?'; we then had a go at completing a range of problem-solving tasks and practised our times tables.

No Pens Day 2023

Year 6 really enjoyed No Pens Day; the children brought in a range of interesting items that were special to them, asked lots of questions and generated good discussion.  It was lovely to find out more about each other, the things that are important to us and why they matter.

Design Technology: A Mexican Style Salad

Year 6 finished off their Design and Technology unit by making a Mexican style salad; this linked nicely to our learning about the Mayans in History.  We practised different chopping techniques and learnt how to be safe and hygienic when preparing food.  There were mixed reviews on the salad - some of us loved it but some of us were not too keen on coriander!
